Sioux City, IA - The Wichita Wingnuts won the series against the Explorers by beating them in the rubber game by a score of 11-8.
Wichita set the tone of the game early with the first three of four batters in the game smacking doubles and all three scoring for a 3-0 Wingnuts lead after the top of the first.
Sioux City answered in the bottom half of the inning when Michael Lang smashed his fifth homer of the season the solo shot extended Lang’s hitting streak to 17 games. Jay Austin then walked and reached third on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pick off attempt and he scored on a Nate Samson sacrifice fly to centerfield making it 3-2 Wichita after one inning.
In the third Wichita started a streak where they would score a run in five straight innings. Tony Thomas doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a Graylin Derke single to give them a 4-2 lead.
Sioux City answered in the bottom half as Michael Lang walked with two outs in the inning, then went first to third on a Jay Austin single and scored on a two out base hit by Nate Samson making it 4-3 Wichita.
The Wingnuts in the fourth got a run on a lead off single by Nick Rotola he went to third on a Logan Watkins double as Watkins had himself a four hit night. And Rotola scored as Nehrir reached on a fielders choice making it 5-3.
Sioux City once again responded to the run scored by Wichita and it only took them two pitches to do so as Jay Baum tripled to open up the fourth and scored on the next pitch as Dexture McCall grounded out to short making it 5-4.
Wichita in the fifth had John Nester reach on a one out single and he would score after the bases were loaded with two outs but Rotola worked a walk to bring in a run.
Sioux City in their half of the fifth put together a big two out rally. Samson started it with a single and Jose Sermo followed with a walk. Jay Baum then roped a 2-run double to left center field to tie the game 6-6. McCall then reached on an error scoring Baum, and McCall scored on a Dylan Kelly base hit giving Sioux City their first lead of the game at 8-6.
Though that lead would not last long as Wichita tied the game in the top of the sixth on Tony Thomas’ 11th home run of the year tying the game 8-8.
Wichita took the lead in the seventh inning when Logan Trowbridge started the inning with a single, he scored on a double by Logan Watkins to give Wichita a 9-8 lead that they would not relinquish.
The Wingnuts added two more runs in the ninth as Trowbridge and Rotola lead off the inning with singles. Trowbridge scoring on an error by Sioux City and Rotola scoring on a sacrifice fly to make it 11-8 Wichita.
Sioux City got the lead off man on in the ninth but could not advance anyone past first base ending the game.
Wichita in this game got the lead off man on base six times of the nine times they came to the plate and every single time the lead off man reached he came around to score.
Sioux City committed 10 errors in the three game series against Wichita and this was just their second series loss of the year.
Sioux City will now travel to Chicago for a quick three game road trip against the Chicago Dogs the first ever meeting between the two franchises with game one of the series beginning at 7:05 pm on Monday. |
