![]() EXPLORERS WIN WILD GAME IN EXTRA INNINGS EXPLORERS WIN WILD GAME IN EXTRA INNINGS
SIOUX CITY, IA - Two errors in the bottom of the 10th inning by the Kansas City T-Bones helped the X’s walk off with the 7-6 win.
The Explorers snap the T-Bones 5 game winning streak with their extra innings win in what can only be described as a whacky, wild and weird.
Kansas City got on the board first with a base hit to lead off the inning by Nick Torres. Torres would score on a sacrifice fly by Angel Rosa to make it 1-0.
Sioux City scored three times in the fourth on a little league home run. Nate Samson came up to bat with Michael Lang at second and Jay Austin at first. Samson hit what was a routine base hit into left field. Lang came around and scored on the base hit. But Jay Austin attempted to go first to third. He made it sliding safely with the throw going to third. Samson aggressively ran to take second base, The throw from T-Bones third baseman Jordan Edgerton sailed into right field, allowing Austin to score. Samson then began running to third. The right fielder Keith Curcio, attempted to throw out Samson at third base. But his throw skipped away from third base and into the Sioux City dugout, allowing Samson to score. The Explorers on the play scored three runs on a base hit with two errors and lead 3-1.
The Explorers would score again in the fifth inning when Dexture McCall lead off with an infield single and would be driven in by a Daniel Jackson double to make it 4-1 X’s.
But Kansas City would tie the game in the sixth. The first four men to the plate singled off of Sioux City starter James Dykstra who finished with 5 innings, allowing 4 runs, on 8 hits, with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks.
Kansas City would score three times in the inning off of four hits all runs charged to Dykstra and tied the game 4-4.
Kansas City would take the lead in the seventh off of X’s reliever Eric Karch, Zach Walters lead off with a base hit and with two down in the inning, Adrian Nieto drove him in with a base hit.
That was the first run allowed in 28 innings by the Sioux City bullpen. Breaking a scoreless innings streak that had gone back to last Sunday in Lincoln against the Saltdogs. In that time the X’s hadn’t allowed a run, giving up only 12 hits, and 8 walks with 36 strike outs.
The T-Bones would tack on another run in the eighth when again the lead off hitter got aboard and came around to score this time being Johnny Davis reaching on a base hit and being driven in by Nick Torres who had a 3 hit night. That made it 6-4 T-Bones.
The T-Bones had four guys reach as the lead off man and all four of them ended up coming around to score.
The Explorers would strike back though with a Jay Austin two run home run down the right field line his first of the season to tie the game 6-6.
We went to extra innings for the first time this year, in the top of the 10th Patrick Schuster was called upon, he set down the T-Bones in order striking out two.
In the bottom of the tenth Luis Durango got on base with a one out single to centerfield. He then stole second base but Lang struck out to make it two outs in the inning. Austin then grounded one to first base, but Torres who replaced Cal Towey at first after Towey was ejected ion the eighth for arguing balls and strikes bobbled the grounder and Austin was safe at first with Durango moving up to third. Nate Samson came to the plate and after working the count full he popped up on the infield and looked like an inning ending pop up. But Torres and Edgerton collided and the ball fell to the ground with Durango scoring from third to win the game in walk off fashion.
The T-Bones committed two errors in the inning allowing the X’s to walk off with their ninth win of the season. The Explorers scored four runs off of Kansas City errors.
The Explorers and T-Bones will play game 2 of the four game set on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
