The Annual Sleep-Out is November 3rd

This will be the thirteenth year for the Siouxland Sleep-Out at Lewis and Clark Park, home of the Explorers. It is a chance for the entire Siouxland community to come together and raise awareness for those individuals, families and children who do not have suitable housing.

The group also raises funding for charitable agencies who reach out to those folks in need, provide supportive services and locate permanent housing. Many choose to spend the night at the ballpark in tents and boxes. Depending on weather and other factors, this really can provide a hint of how homelessness feels. It is fair to say that almost all of those participating appreciate the value of “home.”

Willie Delfs, manager of the event, asks everyone to consider the recent hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and fires show us that something as basic as food and lodging cannot be taken for granted. A Proclamation was read at the City Council Meeting last Monday recognizing November as National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness month. Of course, a home can disappear from weather, economics, poor health, relationship troubles and many other factors.

The Siouxland Sleep-Out is a community event gathering a diverse group of participants. For one night we share the notion of being without a home. Groups from area churches, schools and other organizations have found the event very meaningful. Families and individuals have also made the Sleep-Out an annual learning adventure. Pledges from the campers and corporate sponsorships provide funds which are all directed to the mission of helping the homeless in the Siouxland area. This year we hope for 250 at the ballpark and $60,000 in funding.

Please make plans to attend. Spending the night is encouraged and memorable, but optional. You may come out and join the community activities this year and maybe prepare for next year. Lewis and Clark Park will be open for participants at 3 PM on Friday, November 3rd. You may want to get your box or tent set up during the afternoon taking advantage of daylight and some warmth. Things get rolling about 5 PM with the soup line, silent auction, music around fire pits and great conversation. Later we have drawings, the shelter contest, munchies and more entertainment.
