As a sophomore in 2012, Colwell became the first all-region player in North Dakota State’s Division I program history by being named to the All-Midwest Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association. His .381 batting average and .438 on-base percentage was tops on the team, while also leading the Bison in hits (93), runs (62), triples (9), and stolen bases (12). He set North Dakota State single-season records for games played, at-bats, hits, and triples while also twice tying the single-game record for hits with five.
