The American Association of Professional Baseball has to update their record books, with the Sioux City Explorers winning their seventy-fourth game of the season and breaking the previous record of seventy-three held by the 2014 Wichita Wingnuts.

Sioux City plated two unearned runs right away in the first inning. Rene Tosoni tripled and scored off an error by the shortstop. X’s shortstop Noah Perio Jr knocked in a run with a base-hit single to left, scoring Brock Kjeldgaard from second base.

Explorers tacked on three more in the fifth. X’s centerfielder Matty Johnson worked up a lead off walk, stole second base and scored off a Michael Lang RBI single for the first run. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Brock Kjeldgaard and Noah Perio Jr knocked in the other two, extending the lead to five runs in the contest.

Grand Prairie scored their first runs of the game in the sixth inning. AirHogs designated hitter Victor Diaz smashed a two out, two-run home run to cut the lead to 5-2 after six innings at QuikTrip Park.

In the bottom of the ninth, X’s closer Jose Flores (s-22) pitched a scoreless ninth to get the save and seal their seventy-fourth win of the season, an American Association record (previously held by 2014 Wichita Wingnuts *73).

Explorers starter John Straka (11-3) received the win with an outstanding performance on the mound, going seven innings with two runs allowed (none earned), one hit and a season high twelve strikeouts. Grand Prairie’s starting pitcher Sam Martin (1-1) was charged with the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) in four innings pitched.

Sioux City had three batters finish with double-digit hits. X’s designated hitter Brock Kjeldgaard went 2 for 4 with an RBI, a double, stolen base and two runs scored. Explorer shortstop Noah Perio had two hits, a double and an RBI, and Tommy Mendonca finished with two hits as well.

This 2015 Sioux City Explorers squad has become the most dominant team Sioux City has ever had. On August 8th, 2015 the Explorers broke their franchise record for wins in a season, getting their fifty-third victory of the year with the 2-1 victory over Sioux Falls. From June 26th - August 11th, Sioux City went on a fourteen game win streak, breaking their franchise record for consecutive wins without a loss (*11-1997, Courtesy of SCCJ).

The X’s have also clinched the 2015 American Association Central Division Championship and will host the first two games of playoffs (September 9-10th) at Lewis and Clark Park. Reserve your tickets now by stopping down to the stadium box office located at Lewis & Clark Park (3400 Line Drive, Sioux City, IA 51106) or by ordering online at or by phone at 712-277-WINS (9467).
