SIOUX CITY FALLS TO RAILCATS 5-4 IN THE NINTH07/25/2015 9:02 PM
The Sioux City Explorers fell to the Railcats 5-4 in the ninth inning, ending their win streak at five games. Noah Perio Jr and Tommy Mendonca both knocked in two on the night.
Explorers scored right away knocking in two runs in the first inning to take the early 2-0 lead. X’s right fielder Michael Lang smacked a one out triple to start the momentum for the road club. Sioux City’s #3 and #4 hitters in the lineup, Rene Tosoni and Brock Kjeldgaard worked up one out walks to load them up, and Noah Perio Jr ripped a two-run single scoring Lang and Tosoni from second and third.
Gary SouthShore plated their first run in the second, off of similar circumstances. Jose Sermano tripled with one out to put him in scoring position, and then Roger Bernal hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score a tagging Sermano from third base.
In the third inning, Brock Kjeldgaard and Noah Perio both reached base on balls, and then a Ryan Court hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with two outs. On the next at-bat X’s third baseman Tommy Mendonca ripped a two-run base hit that scored Kjeldgaard on Perio from first and third to extend their lead 4-1.
The Railcats went on to tie it with runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Brandon Thomas knocked in two, with a triple in the gap. In the fifth, Jose Sermano pelted a double to left field scoring a runner from second base.
Gary SouthShore would go on to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth off a fielders choice. Final score, Railcats 5, Explorers 4. Former Sioux City Explorer Chris Bodishbaugh (1-0) received the win going the final two innings allowing no runs, one hit, one walk and one strikeout.
Explorers starter Jeff Marquez (6-5) got the no decision on the night, going five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, three walks with three strikeouts. Rob Wort (4-3) was charged with loss allowing the game winning run to score in the ninth.
Noah Perio Jr and Tommy Mendonca both had two RBI nights, with both going 1 for 4 on the contest. Ryan Court and Matt Koch had double-digit hits tonight, with Court going 2 for 3 with a double, and Koch going 2 for 4.
