XS SWEEP AMARILLO AND WIN SIXTH IN A ROW06/10/2015 8:32 PM
Amarillo, TX- The Sioux City Explorers won their sixth game in a row and tenth on the road Wednesday evening with a score of 10-9 over Amarillo.
Sioux City scored right away plating two runs in the first inning off of two hits. Michael Lang singled, and then X’s designated hitter Brock Kjeldgaard hit a two-run home run to give the X’s a 2-0 lead. The Explorers scored another two runs in the second inning on a similar play. Ryan Court led off with a single to start it, and on the next at-bat Tommy Mendonca smacked his first home run of the year, a two run shot to extend the X’s lead to 4-0.
In the third inning, Brock Kjeldgaard lined a one-out double to put him in scoring position. Noah Perio Jr smacked an RBI single to score Kjeldgaard from second and give Sioux City a 5-0 lead. The Explorers would go on to score two more runs in the inning off an RBI single by Tommy Mendonca and a fielder’s choice that plated Ryan Court.
Sioux City would go on to score a scorching ten runs in the contest with three more runs crossing home plate in the fifth and sixth innings. The Explorers would finish with 18 hits on the night, while leaving seven on-base.
Amarillo scored five runs in the third inning off of four hits and two errors. Four of the five runs scored were unearned. The X’s led by five runs heading into the seventh but the ThunderHeads bats took fire in the bottom of the inning. They scored the first two runs off a sac-fly and an RBI groundout by Amarillo’s shortstop Juan Martinez and first-baseman Rene Leveret. With a runner at second and two outs, ThunderHead centerfielder hit a two-run homer to cut the X’s lead to 10-9.
Jose Flores came in to close it in the ninth inning for Sioux City. He set down the first batter on a fly-out to the shortstop, the second batter Juan Martinez then singled on a 1-0 pitch to put the tying run at first base. The right-hander Flores struck out the next batter Aaron Baker to make two outs in the inning, and then walked Jason Martin to put the leading run on the base paths. With two men on and two outs, third-baseman Kyle Bellows grounded out to end the game. Final score, Explorers 10, ThunderHeads 9.
Ryan Zimmerman (2-1) received the (W) for Sioux City, going six innings, allowing seven runs on six hits while striking out nine batters. X’s closer Jose Flores (8-S) got the save which makes him 8 for 8 in save opportunities this season.
Left-hander Clayton Tanner (0-2) was charged with the loss for Amarillo. The lefty pitched three innings and allowed seven runs (six earned). Colin Allen, Billy Petrick and Richard Barrett pitched in relief for Amarillo as well.
The Explorers had four batters finish with three or more hits on the night. Brock Kjeldgaard had himself a four-hit outing, with three runs, three RBIs, two home runs and a double. Tommy Mendonca, Ryan Court and Noah Perio Jr all finished with three hits in the ball-game.
