CANARIES EVEN THE SERIES AT 1-1 ON FRIDAY NIGHT05/22/2015 9:53 PM
The Sioux City Explorers and Sioux Falls Canaries played their second game of the four game series Friday Night, with the Canaries winning it over the X’s 6-5.
The Canaries got on the board first, scoring in the second inning with a sac-fly RBI by Canaries outfielder Harrison Kain to make it 1-0 Sioux Falls, then had three more runs cross home plate in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by David Bergin and a two run double by second baseman Michael Wing. Sioux Falls led it 4-0 after five inning at Lewis and Clark Park.
The Explorers looked unresponsive after the 4-0 early lead by Sioux Falls, but in the eighth the bats finally clicked. With one out in the inning, Noah Perio Jr singled on a 0-1 count, he then advanced to third on a double by X’s rookie Ino Patron. In the next at-bat, a wild pitch gave the Explorers their first run of the night, scoring Perio from third and moving Patron to second. Matt Koch then cut the lead in half 4-2 with a double that scored Patron. The X’s scored three more runs in the inning to take the lead 5-4, on an RBI single by Matty Johnson and a wild pitch.
In the ninth, the Canaries scored two runs two retake the lead 6-5 and eventually win the game. Sioux Falls outhit the X’s 9-6, but finished the game with one more error on the night (2-1).
Patrick Johnson got the start on the night for Sioux City. He went 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, four runs (two earned), walked four and struck out two. Canaries starter was the 2014 American Association Rookie of the Year Jeremy Strawn who pitched a stellar game, only allowing three hits, two runs while striking out five in 7.1 innings.
Canaries right handed pitcher Byron Minnich (1-0) received the win on the night, going 0.2 innings and striking out two. Explorers pitcher Chris Bodishbaugh was accredited with the loss.
The big hitters for the Canaries were centerfielder Harrison Kain, who went 2 for 5, one RBI, two runs scored and first baseman David Bergin, 2 for 4, two RBIs and a run scored. The X’s shortstop had another great night at the plate, with a 2 for 4 night and a run scored.
The Sioux City Explorer’s will play the Sioux Falls Canaries Saturday night (May 23rd) at Lewis and Clark Park and then will finish the series on Sunday (May 24th) at Canaries ball park, Game time - 4:05.
