The Sioux City Explorers faced the Sioux Falls Canaries on Opening Night at Lewis and Clark Park Thursday evening, winning the ball game 3-1.
Explorers started off the first inning by retiring the first two Canaries at the plate, but a single by Sioux Falls left fielder Brian Humphries kept the inning alive. David Bergin advanced to first off a hit by pitch and then a two out RBI single by Shelby Ford put the Canaries on the board first.
Rene Tosoni became the first runner of the game for the X’s on a two out single, he stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. X’s power hitters Brock Kjeldgaard and Tommy Mendonca both walked to make the bases loaded, but a 5-4-3 putout kept the runners where they were after one.
Sioux Falls went down 1-2-3 in the second on a ground out, strikeout and fly out. Tim Colwell singled to start the second for Sioux City and then stole second base on the first pitch of Matt Koch’s at-bat. On a 1-2 count Koch grounded to the pitcher, but an error on the throw to first scored Colwell from second to tie the game at 1-1, Koch advanced to second on the overthrow. With Koch in scoring position at second, X’s shortstop Noah Perio Jr. knocked in the second run of the ball game for the X’s on an RBI single to take the lead at 2-1.
In the 7th, X’s centerfielder Matty Johnson reached first on a one out walk and advanced to second with a stolen base and then scored from second off of a two out double by Rene Tosoni. Explorers lead 3-1 after 7 which was all they needed to get the Opening Night win at Lewis and Clark Park. Final score being, Sioux City Explorers 3, Sioux Falls Canaries 1.
X’s Opening Night starter Jeff Marquez (1-0) was the winning pitcher on the night, going 6.1 innings, allowing five hits, one run, while striking out five. The starting pitcher for Sioux Falls was right hander Brett Gerritse, who went 5.2 innings, while giving up five hits and two runs (one earned). Rob Wort pitched in relief for the X’s as well as Jose Flores who shut the Canaries down in the ninth to assure the win.
The Explorers finished with seven hits total on the night, with Rene Tosoni having two of them going 2 for 4 with a double an an RBI. Sioux Falls had six hits but also three errors on the contest. Third baseman Shelby Ford had the hot bat for the Canaries, going 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI.
The Sioux City Explorer’s will play the Sioux Falls Canaries on May 22nd and 23rd at Lewis and Clark Park and then will finish the series on Sunday (May 24th) at Canaries ball park, Game time - 4:05.
