LINCOLN | A four-run first inning was all the offense necessary Tuesday night at Haymarket Park as the Sioux City Explorers rolled to an 8-2 exhibition baseball win over the Lincoln Saltdogs.

Following up a 21-11 win over Sioux Falls in a Monday slugfest at Yankton, the Explorers totaled 12 hits against the reigning American Association Central Division champs.

Meanwhile, seven Sioux City pitchers checked Lincoln on six hits while piling up 14 strikeouts over a game that went 10 innings by prior agreement by both teams.

Brock Kjeldgaard’s two-run single started the X’s scoring in the first frame while Ryan Court’s triple and Tim Colwell’s single drove home another two runs.

The Explorers scored three times on two hits, a walk and an error in the sixth inning and then plated one final run in the 10th on the fourth single of the game for shortstop Noah Perio, Jr., batting ninth in the order.

Working two innings apiece in the first six innings were holdovers John Straka and Patrick Johnson along with newcomer Jeff Marquez, all slated for the starting rotation. Jimmer Kennedy, Billy Bullock, Rob Wort and Chris Bodishbaugh each pitched one inning to finish things up.

Lincoln scored off Johnson in the fourth as two groundouts pushed home Matt Forgatch after a leadoff double. The Saltdogs other run came on Jon Gaston’s leadoff homer in the seventh off Kennedy.

The Explorers resume preseason workouts Wednesday through Friday before facing Lincoln again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Kingsley.
