Sioux City Stays on Winning Track08/11/2014 9:46 PM
Gary, IN-The Explorers scraped together a two-out rally in the sixth to take the lead for good in a 4-1 win over the RailCats Monday night at U.S. Steel Yard.
Sioux City (37-45) has now won four straight, and is 6-6 against Gary SouthShore this season. The RailCats (43-38) scored the game’s first run in the third. Logan Brumley led off the inning with a single. Following a fly-out, Brumley advanced to second on a groundout to short. Drew Martinez then brought in Brumley with a single to center.
The Explorers finally dented the scoreboard in the sixth. With two outs, Tim Colwell singled to center. Rene Tosoni tied the game with a double that scored Colwell. The next batter, Andres Perez, singled and drove in Tosoni for a 2-1 lead. Sioux City added some insurance in the eighth. It came in the form of a two-out, two-run home run by Peter Barrows (pictured). It was his 12th of the season, and his third in the last four games. Barrows has hit nine home runs since July 14th, and has hit the last four dingers for the X’s.
Left-hander Lars Liguori posted the victory in his best start since joining the Explorers in late July. Liguori (1-2) had his longest outing as he worked six-and-two-thirds. He gave up just one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Kagen Hopkins took the loss for Gary SouthShore. Hopkins (4-3) lasted six innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and only one walk. Geoff Broussard pitched the ninth for his second save of the season.
Rene Tosoni, Andres Perez, and Peter Barrows all had two-hit nights for Sioux City. The RailCats managed just four base hits against X’s pitching. Drew Martinez went 1-for-3 with an RBI. There was a 14-minute rain delay in the bottom of the fourth.
Sioux City continues its seven-game road trip Tuesday night in Gary with the second of three against the RailCats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 at U.S. Steel Yard. After the series at Gary, the Explorers return home to face Lincoln on Thursday, August 14th.
