Explorers Prolong Mastery of Goldeyes

Sioux City, IA-The Explorers have their first four-game winning streak of the season after a 10-3 victory over Winnipeg Sunday night at Lewis & Clark Park.

Sioux City (32-42) is 4-1 through the first five games of a season-long eight-game home stand. The Explorers have also taken six of the seven meetings with the first-place Goldeyes in 2014. Winnipeg (45-28) opened the night with a two-run top of the first. Brock Bond walked to lead off the inning. Josh Mazzola followed with a line-drive single to left. One out later, league-leading hitter Casey Haerther singled to right and loaded the bases. A fielder’s choice off the bat of Reggie Abercrombie drove in Bond with the first run. Donnie Webb then made it 2-0 with a double to deep left that hopped to the wall and scored Mazzola.

The Explorers answered with a single tally in the bottom of the first. Oscar Mesa (pictured) led off with a liner that dropped in right. Mesa later scored on a two-out base knock to right by Andres Perez. Sioux City moved ahead with a two-spot in the second. Tom Mendonca led off the inning with a single to right. Former Goldeye Amos Ramon then singled to shallow center on a high pop fly that found green grass. Mendonca moved to third on the play, and scored the tying run on a throwing error to first by the pitcher as Dillon Usiak chopped a ball back to the mound. After a fly-out, Mesa reached on an infield single to short that scored Ramon for a 3-2 lead.

Sioux City kept the pressure on with two more in the third. After Andres Perez led off with a base hit to center, RBI doubles by Tom Mendonca and Dillon Usiak made it 5-2 through three. For good measure, the Explorers busted the game open with a five-run sixth. Amos Ramon had a two-run scoring single on a blooper into center. Winnipeg scored a meaningless run in the eighth.

X’s reliever Alex Burnett picked up the win and stretched his scoreless streak on the mound to 21-and-two-thirds. Burnett (4-1) worked three innings and gave up just one hit with two strikeouts and one walk. Lefty starter Jesse English lasted four innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Newly acquired Winnipeg right-hander Jon Sintes took the loss. Sintes (0-1) went three-and-a-third and gave up five runs (four earned) on ten hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

At the plate for the Explorers, Oscar Mesa tied a single-game team-high with five hits (all singles). Mesa also scored twice and drove in a run. Amos Ramon went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run. Andres Perez finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Tim Colwell added two hits to extend his hitting streak to a personal-best ten games. Tom Mendonca bagged two hits, two runs, and two RBIs. For Winnipeg, Josh Mazzola and Donnie Webb each collected two hits. Webb also drove in two. The X’s outhit the Goldeyes 18-9, and each team made one error. Sioux City is 7-3 in its last ten games, and has scored a total of 60 runs in the seven wins.
