Explorers Drop Home Series to T-Bones

Sioux City, IA-The Explorers scored first for the first time in their series with Kansas City, but a three-run second inning for the T-Bones proved to be the difference in a 5-2 win Wednesday night at Lewis & Clark Park.

Sioux City (25-34) is now 2-4 against Kansas City this season as the T-Bones took the series two games to one. It started well for the X’s in the bottom of the first. Oscar Mesa (pictured) led off the inning with a bloop double up the left-field line. Tim Colwell laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Mesa to third. Rene Tosoni then placed a sac fly to center that scored Mesa for a 1-0 lead.

Thanks to three wild pitches and three walks, Kansas City (29-30) answered quickly in the top of the 2nd. Ray Sadler led off the inning with a line-drive single to center. After a fly-out, Vladimir Frias singled to right. Nick Schwaner walked to load the bases. The T-Bones tied it and took a 2-1 lead on two wild pitches. Brian Erie also walked. Following a pitching change, Robby Kuzdale walked to load the bases again. The third run scored on a T.J. Mittelstaedt ground ball to short that was booted.

Kansas City added to its lead in the fourth. Nick Schwaner led off with a single to right-center. With one out, back-to-back doubles by Robby Kuzdale and T.J. Mittelstaedt made it 5-1 T-Bones. The Explorers plated one more with a solo home run in the eighth by Chris Escobar. It was his first dinger of the season.

On the mound, Kansas City starter Kyle DeVore worked into the ninth inning before picking up the victory. DeVore (3-2) went eight-and-a-third and gave up two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts and no walks. He was pulled after attempting to field a high pop-fly in front of the mound that glanced off his glove for an error. Kris Regas came on and recorded the final two outs for his 13th save of the season. For the Explorers, newcomer Kyle Allen took the loss. Allen (0-1) lasted just one-and-a-third and gave up three earned runs on two hits with one strikeout and two walks. He also threw three wild pitches.

At the plate, T.J. Mittelstaedt went 1-for-5 with two RBIs for Kansas City. For Sioux City, Chris Escobar was 1-for-3 with the home run. The T-Bones outhit the X’s 6-3. The two squads combined for four errors, two on each side. The Explorers managed just nine base hits over the final two games of the series.

Sioux City closed the six-game home stand with a record of 2-4. The Explorers have Thursday off before starting a weekend series at Wichita Friday night. First pitch at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Explorers return home for a four-game set against Gary on Monday, July 21st.
