X's Lose Series in Fargo06/01/2014 2:40 PM
Fargo, ND-The Explorers played their shortest game of the season and dropped their third one-run contest of the series with the RedHawks 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.
The game was scoreless through the first two innings before Sioux City (6-12) broke through in the third. With one out in the inning, Todd Jennings singled to left. Michael Lang made it first and second when he singled to left. A fly-out to right advanced Jennings to third, and he scored the game’s first run on a balk by RedHawks starting pitcher Jake Laber.
Fargo-Moorhead (10-7) took the lead an inning later in the fourth. Sawyer Carroll led off with a single to right. Ronnie Bourquin then smacked a double to put runners at the corners with nobody out. A sacrifice fly to center off the bat of C.J. Retherford drew the game even as Carroll tagged and scored from third. Nic Jackson followed with a walk, and Petey Paramore singled to left to give the RedHawks a 2-1 lead that would hold the rest of the day.
On the mound, former North Dakota State standouts Jake Laber and John Straka (pictured) dueled for eight innings. Laber picked up the win as he gave up just one earned run on four base hits. Laber (2-1) struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Straka took the loss for Sioux City. Straka (1-2) allowed two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Nate Garcia pitched the ninth for his sixth save of the season.
Each team only mustered five base hits. No batter for either squad had more than one hit. There were no errors in the game. It lasted 2 hours and 13 minutes to become the shortest game of the season played by the Explorers. The season opener at Sioux Falls May 15th went 2 hours and 15 minutes. Fargo-Moorhead won three of the four games by a single tally.
Sioux City returns home Monday night against Gary SouthShore. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For ticket information and promotion specials at Lewis & Clark Park, call 712-277-WINS or visit the Explorers website at www.xsbaseball.com. |
