Sioux City, IA - Sioux City increased their winning streak up to a season high eight games on Saturday as they beat the Texas Airhogs 12-3 in a series opening win. Sioux City used nine stolen bases in the first four innings to to gather their large lead. The nine stolen bags tie an American Association League record for most by a single team in a game. The leader in the swiped bag department was veteran outfielder Kyle Wren who ended up just one stolen base shy of tying the league record for a single player in a game as Wren took four bases. Wren had a big night offensively for the Explorers as he went 3-6, with three runs, two RBI’s and four stolen bases. Texas had actually jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Sioux City in the second and third innings as a lead off double by Chen Junpeng was cashed in by Texas on a couple of sacrifice hits. And Jonathan Moroney scored on a two out triple by Javion Randle. Sioux City responded in the bottom of the third tying the game at two after Wren reached on an error to get the rally started. He would score on a Nate Samson single and Michael Lang who reached on an infield single and stole a base scored on a throwing error by the catcher to tie the game. Sioux City took the lead in the fourth with a five run inning. Sebastian Zawada doubled to lead things off and scored on a Kyle Wren single. Samson drove in another with a base hit, Jose Sermo collected two RBI’s with a double down the left field line and Drew Stankiewicz capped off the rally with a run scoring single making it 7-2 X’s. Sioux City wasn’t finished adding four more runs in the fifth beginning with a Zawada solo homer to lead off the inning. Dylan Kelly then doubled and scored on another Wren RBI single. Wren would score on a a bases loaded walk to Drew Stankiewicz and Lang came home on a wild pitch to push Sioux City to an 11-2 lead. The X’s tacked on their final run of the night on a bases loaded walk from Jose Sermo in the sixth to make it 12-2. Not lost in all the offense tonight from the Explorers who also pounded out 16 hits in the process, was Taylor Jordan (4-8). Jordan put together his second straight quality start as he dominated the Airhogs lineup for eight innings. He allowed just the two runs on five hits, giving up just a single walk and striking out eight. It was Jordan’s first victory since June 21st in a complete game shut out against the Sioux Falls Canaries. Sioux City with their eighth straight win now has the third longest win streak in the league during the 2019 season. They will go for their ninth in a row on Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 4:02 pm. Southpaw Andrew Chin will be on the bump for the X’s and he will face Gan Quan of the Texas Airhogs. |
