Sioux City, IA - The Sioux City Explorers won the series against the Kansas City T-Bones with a dominating 11-3 victory on Sunday.
Sioux City got yet another good outing from their starting pitcher as Luis Mateo tossed his sixth straight quality start. Mateo (10-4) went 6 shut out innings, scattering 6 hits, striking out five and walking three. In the four game series, Explorers starters combined for 27 innings pitched and allowed just two runs for a 0.66 ERA in the series.
Mateo also got plenty of run support in his start, the X’s scored in the second as Jose Sermo tripled to lead off the inning. Jay Baum the league RBI leader would drive him in and make it 1-0 Sioux City. Baum was brought home by Dylan Kelly who singled with two out in the inning to make it 2-0 X’s.
In the fourth Sioux City would put together a four run rally Sermo lead off the inning with a single. Jay Baum would reach on a bunt single and Sermo went to third on a throwing error. Sermo would then score on a Blake Schmit fielders choice making it 3-0. On a Dexture McCall base hit Schmit went to third and would score on a Dylan Kelly sacrifice fly. Daniel Jackson then singled and Luis Durango tripled with two out bringing home two runs and the X’s were on top 6-0.
Samson and Schmit would reach in the fifth and McCall brought them both home with a single to make it 8-0 Explorers.
In the seventh Sioux City added three more runs as Schmit lead off the inning with a walk and Kelly singled. Jackson doubled home a run. Kelly scored on a Durango sacrifice fly and Samson drove in Jackson for the X’s 11th run of the game.
Kansas City was able to get their only runs of the ball game in the seventh as Ryan Brett doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a Todd Cunningham single.
In the ninth Kansas City would load the bases with one out and former Explorer, Noah Perio would single home two runs making it 11-3 Sioux City.
With the win the X’s were able to win the series taking three of four games from Kansas City who they will face three more times in the month of August before the regular season is over.
Sioux City will now have two days in a row off before finishing off the nine game home stand with a two game series against the newest team in the league, the Chicago Dogs. With both games starting at 7:05. |
