Sioux Falls, SD - Sioux City wins their fifth game of the season tonight with a 7-3 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries.
The X’s started their scoring in the second inning off of Canaries starter Grady Wood who took the loss tonight (1-1) going six and a third, allowing five runs on nine hits walking two and striking out one. Jay Baum started the second by drawing a walk, after advancing to third after a ground out and a walk scored on a Daniel Jackson base hit to left field. Jackson would go first to third on a Dylan Kelly base hit and then score on a Dexture McCall sacrifice fly to put the X’s up 2-0.
The Canaries would answer back and after scoring in the third Jabari Henry tied the game at two with a solo home run off the left field foul pole to lead off the fourth.
The game would not stay tied for long though as Sioux City scored twice in the fifth. Luis Durango lead off the inning with a base hit and after getting to second on a Michael Lang sacrifice bunt Jay Austin would bring him home with an single. Austin would score the second run of the inning when Jay Baum beat out a possible double pay ball and give the X’s a 4-2 lead.
Chris Grayson would pull Sioux Falls within one taking Sioux City starter James Dykstra for an opposite field home run. Dykstra still recorded his second win with the Explorers (2-0) going five innings, allowing three runs with only two being earned, on seven hits and striking out two and walking one.
The Explorers bullpen was once again in shut down mode. Using five pitchers; Flores, Schuster, Karch, Horstman and Broussard after Dykstra to hold the Canaries scoreless over the last four innings of play.
The Explorers would score once in each of the final three innings to finish off the Canaries. Michael Lang ended up with three hits in the game to go with two doubles and RBI and a run scored. Jay Austin also put together a three hit night for Sioux City with an RBI and a run.
Sioux City had eleven hits in the game with nine of them being singles, Lang’s two doubles were the only two extra base hits of the night. As a team Sioux City only struck out twice.The X’s have now scored more than six runs and collected more than ten hits in five of their first six games with all of those occurrences turning into victories for the club.
The X’s will go for the sweep on Thursday night in Sioux Falls with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
