SIOUX CITY, IA - The American Association of Professional Baseball announced the 2016 American Association Postseason All-Star Team and Sioux City Explorers shortstop Nate Samson has been honored as the league’s top SS.


Samson, 29, originally signed with the Explorers in April of 2014. In 43 games with the X’s, Samson had an immediate impact in the lineup as he led the team in hits (55), doubles (12), runs scored (26), and RBIs (23). He began the season on a team-best 12-game hitting streak and had an impressive .335 batting average. For his performance, Samson had his contract purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 29th and was assigned to the class Double-A Mobile BayBears where he would spend the rest of the season playing in 46 games, collecting 32 hits, including 4 homeruns and 6 doubles, with a .274 batting average. Samson spent last season in the Dodgers organization after he was selected in the Rule 5 Minor League Draft from the DBacks and finished the season playing for the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers.

Samson currently leads the American Association with 131 hits, with his 130th hit in his first at-bat during last night’s game versus the Lincoln Saltdogs, he broke the Explorers franchise record for hits in a season (previous mark of 129 set by Noah Perio in 2015). Samson extended the record later that night, with a single in the seventh inning, giving him 131 total hits.  Samson is currently ranks 2nd in the American Association in doubles (28), ranks 3rd in the American Association with a .345 batting average, tied for 3rd in stolen bases (30) and currently holds a .418 on base percentage, which ranks him 4th in the American Association. On the year, Samson has also scored 63 runs, clubbed 5 home runs, while collecting a team leading 66 RBI’s.  Samson was named to the 2016 American Association All-Star game held at CHS Field in St, Paul, MN on August 2nd.

Samson began his professional career after being drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 34th round of the 2006 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Forest High School. The Ocala, FL native would spend 8 years in the Cubs system, playing the majority of games at the Double-A level for the Tennessee Smokies while spending parts of 2 seasons playing for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs in Des Moines, IA. Samson’s best season came in 2008 playing for the Cubs affiliate in Peoria where he produced the 5th most hits in the entire Midwest League with 141 in 128 games and was also rated the best defensive second baseman in the Midwest League by Baseball America.

The Sioux City Explorers are in a pennant race to claim the 2016 American Association Central Division Championship, and currently hold a one game league over the second place Lincoln Saltdogs.  The X’s will play the final 4 games of the regular season in Amarillo, TX starting tonight.
