MENDONCAS WALK-OFF SINGLE WINS IT FOR XS07/20/2016 10:02 PM
Sioux City, IA- The Sioux City Explorers win in walk-off fashion, getting the 4-3 victory in extra innings at Marcy Field at Lewis and Clark Park. Sioux City jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. X’s right fielder Michael Lang knocked in a run with an RBI triple, and later scored off a Nate Samson single. Joplin recorded their first run in the third inning. With the bases loaded, Brandon Tierney was hit by a pitch to score the runner at third base. In the sixth inning, Explorers extended their lead further. Michael Lang doubled, advanced to third with a stolen base, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Nate Samson. The Blaster tied the game in the seventh inning. With runners at first and second, Geraldo Valentin scored both runners with an RBI double tying the game at 3-3. In the bottom of the ninth inning with the score tied, Blaster reliever Victor Capellan forced extra innings on the night, going 1-2-3 to end the ninth inning. Sioux City went on to win the game in the bottom of the eleventh. Matt Koch led-off with a walk, moved to first on a sacrifice, advanced to third off a wild pitch, and scored on a walk-off single by X’s third baseman Tommy Mendonca to get the 4-3 victory. Explorers starter Bryan Escanio (3-2) finished with a no decision, allowing only one run in five innings pitched. X’s right-hander and 2016 All-Star Connor Overton (5-0) received the victory, pitching two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Joplin’s starting pitcher Wander Perez (0-0) had a no decision on the night, giving up three runs in six innings pitched. Right-hander Keith Picht (1-2) was charged with the loss, allowing the winning run to score in the bottom of the eleventh inning.
