SLATTERYS THREE RBI NIGHTS HELPS WITH XS VICTORY07/12/2016 9:48 PM
Winnipeg, CA- The Sioux City Explorers took game one of their three game series in Winnipeg, with an 8-4 victory in nine innings at Shaw Park. Sioux City recorded the first runs of the contest in the top of the second. With a runner on and two outs, Brendan Slattery smashed a two-run homer, giving the Explorers the early 2-0 lead. Winnipeg answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second. Reggie Abercrombie reached first on a base-hit, moved to second off a Jacob Rogers single, and scored on base-hit to center field by Casio Grider, cutting the lead to 2-1. Explorers tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning. Brendan Slattery continued his hot night at the plate, knocking in a run with an RBI single. X’s relief pitcher/first baseman Jacob Kuebler contributed on the offensive side, singling to score a run. Derrick Robinson plated the final run of the inning with an RBI single to right field, extending the lead to 5-1. In the bottom half of the fourth, the Goldeyes added their second run. Reggie Abercrombie cranked a solo-shot to cut the lead to 5-2 after four innings of play. Sioux City racked up two more runs in the fifth. X’s third baseman Tommy Mendonca knocked in a run with an RBI double. Ralph Henriquez scored the runner from third off a 4-3 groundout, extending their 7-2 lead. Another home run for Winnipeg cut the lead down to 7-4. In the bottom of the sixth, Josh Romanski crushed a two-run homer to cut the lead to three runs. Explorers totaled one more run in the contest, giving them the 8-4 lead which would go on to be the final score of the game. Sioux City’s starter Graham Johnson (4-2) received the victory on the night, going six solid innings with four runs allowed on nine hits, no walks, while striking out three. Winnipeg’s right-hander Mikey Obrien (5-4) was charged with the loss, giving up seven runs in only four innings pitched.
