EXPLORERS GET THE 2-1 SERIES VICTORY OVER FARGO WITH TWO WINS ON THURSDAY07/01/2016 3:28 AM
Fargo, ND- The Sioux City Explorers and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks were forced to put the game on-hold with the score tied at 6-6 after seven innings, due to the (12:00 midnight) curfew. Fargo-Moorhead recorded their first four runs of the contest in the second inning. Josh Mazzola scored the first run with a solo-shot. Kes Carter knocked in two runs with an RBI double, and later scored himself on a Bryan Johns base-hit single.
RAIN DELAY FOR 2:45 Explorers answered with three runs of their own in the fifth. Matt Koch doubled to score a run, the second run scored from third on a Brendan Slattery RBI groundout, and Matt Koch scored the third run for Sioux City, crossing home on a passed ball. Sioux City went on to take the lead in the sixth. Michael Lang led-off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a Nate Samson base hit, and scored on a sacrifice-bunt by Tommy Mendonca to tie the game at 4-4. Jarek Cunningham’s RBI single scored Samson from third to take the 5-4 lead. Cunningham scored later in the inning on an error for the sixth run, extending the lead. Fargo-Moorhead tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Chad Mozingo smashed a two-run homer to tie the game at 6-6. Due to (12:00 midnight) curfew, the Sioux City Explorers and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks will resume Wednesday’s game at 4:00 on Thursday.
GAME RESUMED 4:00 ON THURSDAY Neither team scored another run until the eleventh inning. Michael Lang reached first on a single, advanced to third off a Jarek Cunningham base hit, and scored on a wild pitch to secure a 7-6 win for the Sioux City Explorers over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Explorers right-hander Rob Wort received the win, allowing no runs in 1.2 innings with four strikeouts. Fargo-Moorhead reliever Colton Reavis was charged with the loss, going three innings with one run allowed.
GAME TWO Fargo, ND- The Sioux City Explorers ended the taxing three game series in Fargo with the 4-1 extra-inning (12 innings) victory over the RedHawks. Exploreres won two out of three in Fargo to get the series victory. In the top of the third, Sioux City recorded the first run of the contest. Jarek Cunningham read base on a hit-by-pitch, advanced to second on a base-on-balls by Tim Colwell, and scored off an RBI single by Ralph Henriquez. Fargo-Moorhead tied the game in the fifth. Brian Humphries led-off with a single, moved to second on a base hit, and scored on a fielder’s choice to tie the game at 1-1. Pitching was stellar for both ball clubs, with neither team allowing another run to cross in nine innings of play, forcing extra-innings with the score tied at 1-1. Explorers tacked on three big runs in the twelfth inning. One run was scored on an error by the right fielder. The second and third runs crossed home off a two-run single by Jarek Cunningham, giving the X’s the 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the twelfth, X’s reliever Dylan Rheault (s-1) struck out the side to clinch the 4-1 victory over Fargo-Moorhead at Newman Outdoor Field. Explorers left-hander James Walsh (0-1) finished with a no decision, going seven solid innings with only one run allowed while recording nine strikeouts. X’s right-hander Rob Wort (2-2) received his second victory of the night (winning game one of the double-header), pitching 0.2 innings with a strikeout. RedHawks starter Cody Scarpetta (1-0) had a solid outing on the mound but ended with a no decision, allowing only one run in 7.1 innings with eight strikeouts. Lefty Matt Snyder (0-2) was charged with the loss for Fargo-Moorhead, giving up three runs (two earned) in 4.2 innings pitched. The Sioux City Explorers will begin a six game home stand (July 1-6th) with a three game series against the Gary Southshore Railcats at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
