RENE TOSONI RETURNS FOR 2015 SEASON03/06/2015 11:33 AM
SIOUX CITY - Sioux City Explorers field manager Steve Montgomery announced today that the baseball club has re-signed former Minnesota Twins Major League outfielder, Rene Tosoni to a 2015 American Association contract. The 2015 season will mark Rene’s 9th season of professional baseball and second season as a member of the X’s.
Tosoni, a product of Toronto, Ontario, CA was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 34th round of the 2004 MLB June Amateur Draft from Terry Fox SS High School (Port Coquitlam, BC) and by the Minnesota Twins in the 36th round of the 2005 MLB June Amateur Draft from Chipola College (Marianna, FL). He played six seasons in Twin’s system and made his major league debut with the Twins on April 28th, 2011, Rene played in 60 Major Leagues games for the Twins in 2011 and on September 27th, Rene was the first Minnesota Twins’ player to hit a grand slam at Target Field. During his time with the Twins, Rene played parts of four seasons (2009-2012) at the Double-A or Triple-A level. In four seasons at the Double-A level, Tosoni appeared in 365 games and collected 323 hits, 60 doubles, 33 homeruns, while accumulating a .253 batting average and 152 RBI’s.
His best statistical year was in 2009 as a member of the New Britain Rock Cats in the Eastern League, as he appeared in 122 games and tallied 115 hits and 25 doubles, 15 homeruns, 71 runs batted in to go along with a .271 batting average. In 2013, Tosoni played with the Milwaukee Brewers Double-A affiliate in Huntsville, AL. For the season, Rene played in 131 games while collecting 106 hits, 17 doubles, 11 homeruns and 46 RBI’s.
In his first season in Sioux City in 2014, the 28 year old hit .277 and lead the 2014 squad in games played (99), at-bats (394), runs scored (66), walks (50), hits (109), doubles (29) and triples (6), while finishing 2nd on the team in homeruns (7) and RBI’s (57).
“Signing Rene back this season was one of our bigger priorities this off-season as he provides a big boost to our line-up, but more importantly he adds veteran leadership to our team on and off the field”, stated field manager, Steve Montgomery.
With the re-signing of Tosoni, the Explorers now have 12 players signed to 2015 contracts, including 5 pitchers and 7 position players.
