Geoff Broussard Heading To Angels Organization02/20/2015 11:25 AM
SIOUX CITY, IA – The Sioux City Explorers announced today that the 2014 AL West Division Champion, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have purchased the contract of Explorers RHP Geoff Broussard. Broussard will report to spring training with the Angels when pitchers and catchers report in the coming weeks to earn a spot within the Angels organization for the 2015 season.
Broussard, a 23-year-old Montclair, California native, was drafted in the 23rd round of the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies out of California Polytechnic State University, Pomona. Over two seasons in the Phillies farm system (2012-2013), Geoff appeared in 55 games and recorded 97 strikeouts to just 20 walks in 106.1 innings pitched and with a 3.22 ERA.
“ Geoff was a key piece to our bullpens success this past season and I am very happy Geoff is getting another chance with an affiliated organization as he did everything we asked of him last season and is very deserving of this opportunity, stated X’s field manager, Steve Montgomery.”
In his first season as a member of the Sioux City Explorers in 2014, Broussard appeared in 41 games (3 starts) and put together an 8-1 record with a 3.26 ERA in 88.1 innings and struck out 83 batters while only issuing 31 free passes.
“I am very excited for Geoff and the opportunity he is getting again with another MLB organization, I felt Geoff was one of the best arms in the American Association last season and we wish him the best with the Angels, comments X’s pitching coach Bobby Post.”
With Broussard’s signing by the Angels organization, the Sioux City Explorers have now had four player’s contracts purchased by an affiliated organization in the past year (Nate Samson –Arizona Diamondbacks, Rob Wort – Arizona Diamondbacks, Tyler Graham – San Francisco Giants).
In other team news, the X’s have re-signed catcher Dillon Usiak for the 2015 season. Dillon will be given an opportunity to compete for a starting job in spring training this season.
