Sioux City-----Righthander Nick Schumacher hurled a complete game as the Explorers snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-0 win here Saturday over Fargo-Moorhead. In the shutout, Schumacher scattered four hits, struck out eight and allowed only one Red Hawks base runner to reach third base as he picked up his third win of the season without a loss.
Schumacher and Fargo-Moorhead starter Paul Burnside matched pitch for pitch through the first six scoreless innings before the Explorers scored four runs in the seventh off the losing Red Hawk hurler. Ray Serrano, who finished the game with three hits, started the seventh with a single. Tyler Goodro then doubled into right centerfield that scored Serrano with the first run of the game. Mike Murphy, pinch running for Goodro scored on a single by Ryan Priddy, his second hit of the game. The Explorers topped off the scoring in the seventh when Yusuke Inogochi drove in the final two runs with a single. The Explorers added their final run in the seventh when Serrano led off the inning with a double and later scored on a fielders choice ground ball to third base by Murphy. Burnside, who took the loss for Fargo-Moorheader struck out 11 batters in six and one third innings as his record drops to 1-2 for the season.
With the victory for the Explorers it was the 1,400th career victory as a manager for the X's skipper Stan Cliburn. The Explorers and Fargo-Moorhead will close out the three-game series at Lewis and Clark Park Sunday at 6:05.
