GOLDEYES SALVAGE FINAL GAME OF SERIES VS SIOUX CITY

Winnipeg, CA - The Sioux City Explorers fall 13-2 to the Goldeyes in final game of series in Winnipeg, the X’s won the first three games of the series with ease. 

 

Winnipeg scored early and often plating three runs right away in the bottom of the first off a three run homer by Goldeyes shortstop Josh Mazzola to take the early lead. The Goldeyes went on two score three more in the second and another in the third to extend the lead to seven after three innings of play. 

 

The Explorers plated their first run in the fifth, Matt Koch led-off with a single to center, advanced to second off a Matty Johnson base-hit, moved to third off a wild pitch and later scored on a Rene Tosoni sacrifice fly to center field. 

 

In the seventh the X’s tact on one more, X’s centerfield Matty Johnson reached base off a fielders choice. With two outs and a runner on, Michael Lang ripped a single to third, advancing Johnson to second. On the next at-bat Matty Johnson scored from second off an error by the shortstop to cut the lead to 7-2. 

 

Winnipeg went on to score five in the seventh and a run in the eighth to go on to win 13-2 at Shaw Park. Sioux City finished with two runs off nine hits, while the Goldeyes plated thirteen with sixteen hits in the contest.

 

Jeff Marquez (4-4) was the losing pitcher for Sioux City. The right-hander had a rough outing giving up nine runs (eight earned) in six innings pitched. Goldeyes starter Nick Hernandez (4-2) received the win for Winnipeg going 7.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on nine hits, a walk, while striking out three. 

 

The Explorers had three batters finish with double-digit hits. Matty Johnson had another hot night at the plate going 2 for 5 with a run scored, Tommy Mendonca went 2 for 4 with a triple, and designated hitter Dillon Usiak had two hits on the contest as well. The big hitter for Winnipeg was catcher Luis Allen, who had three hits, a grand slam, five RBIs and two runs scored. Alen also set the new team record for career RBI’s with 322.
