Sioux City-----St. Paul scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 14-2 win here Monday over the Explorers. In the first inning, the Saints sent nine batters to the plate and had a 5-0 lead before the Explorers ever batted.
The Explorers did come back and score two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but could never catch up as St. Paul scored runs in every inning except second, seventh and ninth innings. Seven of the 14 runs came off losing hurler Jason Jarvis (4-7) who pitched just three innings, his shortest outing of the season. St. Paul pounded out 17 hits, including a couple of solo home runs by Jose Hernandez and Miles Durham as the Saints won the season series from the Explorers six games to five.
The Explorers defense didn't help much as the X's made three errors in the contest. The one bright spot for the Explorers was Brandon Newton as he had his second straight three hit night, extending his hitting streak to five games. The Explorers will now begin a six-game road trip starting Tuesday with a three-game series at Gary and then three more games at Lincoln over the weekend before returning home next Tuesday, July 31st.
