Sioux City, IA- The Sioux City Explorers extend their winning streak to four games with an impressive 2-1 victory over Sioux Falls. Sioux City started off the season at 0-6 but has since improved to 4-6 while keeping their winning streak intact.
Explorers came out swinging, plating two early runs in the bottom of the first inning. X’s left-fielder led-off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a sac-bunt, stole third base and scored on an RBI single by Noah Perio. X’s shortstop Nate Sampson knocked in Perio on the next at-bat with his own RBI single, giving them the quick 2-0 lead.
Canaries first baseman Ozney Guillen cut the lead to one run with a solo-shot in the second, but that would be the only run scored for Sioux Falls with X’s pitching prevailing. Final score, Explorers 2, Canaries 1.
Explorers starter Graham Johnson (1-0) received the win, allowing only one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three in 5.2 innings pitched. Relief pitching remained strong on the night, holding on to the 2-1 lead throughout the game. X’s closer Connor Overton (s-2) got the save for Sioux City, going 1-2-3 to clinch the victory.
Sioux Falls left-hander Joe Bircher (0-1) had a quality night on the mound but was charged with the loss, allowing two runs, on nine hits, while striking out eight in nine innings pitched.
Sioux City had two batters finish the night with double-digit hits. X’s second baseman Noah Perio went 2-4 with an RBI, double and a run scored. Explorers centerfielder Matty Johnson was the second player with getting double-digit hits, going 2 for 3 on Saturday.
The Explorers will wrap up the series vs Sioux Falls and the home-stand, tomorrow at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park, with first pitch at 2:00.
