Sioux City Sets Season High in Hits

Sioux City, IA-The Explorers closed out the month of July in style as they churned out a season-high 21 hits in a 15-3 rout of Fargo-Moorhead Thursday night at Lewis & Clark Park.  

 

Sioux City (29-42) evened the four-game series at one win apiece, and is now 3-6 against the RedHawks (34-36) this season. The Explorers fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first after a solo home run by Zach Penprase. The X’s quickly took the lead with a two-spot in the bottom of the inning against newly acquired right-hander Josh Mooney. Oscar Mesa led off with a walk followed by a single to center from Tim Colwell. A one-out bloop single up the right field line by Andres Perez scored Mesa to tie it. Peter Barrows then punched a single to left that scored Colwell for a 2-1 lead.

 

Sioux City grew the lead in the second with four more runs after the first five batters reached base. Chris Escobar walked to lead off the inning and immediately scored as Oscar Mesa tripled to the gap in right-center. Tim Colwell walked. A single by Rene Tosoni scored Mesa for a 4-1 lead. Andres Perez reached on a walk. Peter Barrows brought in Colwell with a sacrifice fly-out to left. An intentional walk of Amos Ramon loaded the bases. Following a strikeout, Tosoni scored on a walk to Michael Lang and it was 6-1 through two.

 

The Explorers added three in the third inning, highlighted by a Peter Barrows solo home run to deep left. It was his eighth big-fly of the season. Sioux City continued the offensive barrage in the sixth. The X’s sent 12 men to the plate and scored six more times. Barrows and Dillon Usiak (pictured) each had two-run scoring singles in the inning. Fargo-Moorhead tallied two in the seventh for the game’s final margin.

 

On the mound, Sioux City right-hander John Straka ended a string of three straight no-decisions with the win. Straka (6-4) worked eight innings and allowed three earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks. In his American Association debut for Fargo, Josh Mooney lasted just one inning. Mooney (0-1) gave up five earned runs on four hits with one strikeout and four walks.

 

The Explorers outhit the RedHawks 21-8. Sioux City batters matched a season-high in walks with 10. Andres Perez went 4-for-4 (three singles, one double) with a run scored and two RBIs. Peter Barrows had a three-hit game (homer, two singles) and matched a season-best five RBIs. Dillon Usiak finished 3-for-6 with two RBIs. Oscar Mesa collected two hits, two RBIs, and four runs. Every X’s batter had at least one hit on the night. For the RedHawks, Zach Penprase had two hits (homer), scored one, and drove in one.
