Sioux Falls, SD-The Explorers fell behind 8-1 for a second straight night before rallying to stun the Canaries 10-9 at the Birdcage Sunday.
With the win, Sioux City (28-41) shut the door on a five game road losing streak, and is now 5-5 against Sioux Falls this season. The Canaries opened the game with a bang in the bottom of the first. After three straight walks, Chris Duffy launched a grand slam to deep right field for a 4-0 lead. The Explorers first mark of the game came in the second. Peter Barrows clubbed a towering, one-out solo home run to deep left for his seventh dinger of the season.
Sioux Falls (24-45) scored twice in the bottom of the second. Steve Tinoco smashed a one-out solo home run to right. Back-to-back doubles by Sam Lind and A.J. Kirby-Jones gave the Canaries a 6-1 lead. In the third, Tinoco doubled to deep center for an 8-1 cushion. Chris Valencia and Ty Forney scored on the two-out extra-base hit.
Sioux City continued its comeback in the middle innings with a single tally in the fourth. Tim Colwell led off with an infield single chopped over the mound. Colwell reached second on a passed ball and later scored on a Rene Tosoni line-drive single to right.
The Explorers made up ground in a big way with a five-run fifth. Leading off, Dillon Usiak singled to deep right off the wall. Michael Lang followed with a single to center. Oscar Mesa then lined a base hit to left that scored Usiak. A catcher’s throwing error on a pick-off attempt at second pushed Lang and Mesa up to second and third. An RBI bloop single by Colwell drove in Lang and it was 8-4. After a strikeout and a walk, Peter Barrows punched a single to left that brought home Mesa. Tom Mendonca bounced into a fielder’s choice that scored Colwell. Finally, Amos Ramon cut the lead to 8-7 with a base knock to left that plated Barrows.
The Canaries scored their final run of the contest in the sixth with an RBI single to right-center by A.J. Kirby-Jones. Steve Tinoco scored on the play after he had reached earlier on a single to left. Sioux City drew within one again in the seventh. Tim Colwell reached on a ground ball error by the second baseman. Rene Tosoni moved Colwell to third on a base hit. Andres Perez then bagged an RBI single to center that cut the Sioux Falls lead to one.
In the eighth, Sioux City registered two more runs to take a 10-9 lead. The Explorers used two walks, a bunt single, and two wild pitches to swing it in their favor. Amos Ramon and Dillon Usiak both walked. Michael Lang reached on the bunt single. Ramon then scored on one of the wild pitches, and Usiak came home with the go-ahead run on a sacrifice line-out to right by Oscar Mesa.
For the Explorers, Rob Wort picked up the win in relief. Wort (2-1) was one of six hurlers used in the game. He worked one-and-two-thirds and gave up just a hit with three strikeouts and one walk. Chase Boruff took the loss for Sioux Falls. Boruff (0-2) pitched one inning and allowed two earned runs on one hit with two walks and one strikeout. Chris Bodishbaugh came on in the ninth and set the Canaries down in order for his 10th save of the season.
At the plate, Tim Colwell led the Explorers with three hits, three runs scored, and an RBI. Rene Tosoni, Michael Lang, and Peter Barrows all collected two hits as well. Barrows and Oscar Mesa each drove in two. For the Canaries, Steve Tinoco went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Chris Duffy drove in four on the slam.
Following the two-day all-star break, the Explorers return to Sioux City on Wednesday July 30th for an eight-game home stand against Fargo-Moorhead and Winnipeg.
