Sioux City, IA-The Explorers lost at home for a third straight time as the Wingnuts won the Independence Day contest 12-2 Friday night at Lewis & Clark Park.
Sioux City (20-29) opened the Fourth of July affair against Wichita with a run in the bottom of the first. With two outs, back-to-back doubles by Rene Tosoni and Andres Perez made it 1-0 X’s.
Wichita (32-17) went right to work offensively in the next half-inning. Following a strikeout and a fly-out, Trevor Whyte reached in the second with a line-drive single to center. A bunt single by David Amberson put runners at first and second. Chris McClendon then swung it in the Wingnuts’ favor with a three-run home run to deep left-center for a 3-1 lead. McClendon also had a two-run scoring single in the third as part of a four-run inning for Wichita that made it 7-1. The Explorers scored their final run of the night in the bottom of the third as Rene Tosoni delivered an RBI single to center that drove in Tim Colwell. Colwell had reached on a bunt single up the third-base line.
The Wingnuts plated single tallies in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Ryan Khoury belted a two-run home run to deep left in the ninth as part of a three-run inning. Starter Jason Van Skike picked up the win on the mound. In his longest outing of the season, Van Skike (5-2) worked seven innings and gave up two earned runs on ten hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Greg Holt suffered the loss for Sioux City. Holt (2-7) went three innings and allowed seven earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
At the plate, Tim Colwell went 2-for-5 and stretched his hitting streak to nine games. Rene Tosoni, Andres Perez, and Tom Mendonca all had two hits as well. For Wichita, Chris McClendon finished 4-for-5 with seven RBIs and three runs scored. McClendon was just a triple shy of the cycle. Jake Kahaulelio went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run. Four other Wingnuts collected two hits each.
