Kansas City, KS-Behind a one-hit pitching performance from Patrick Johnson, the Explorers made it three straight victories with a 4-0 win over the T-Bones Tuesday night at Community America Ballpark.
Sioux City (12-20) posted its second shutout win of the season. The contest was scoreless through the first three innings before the Explorers plated a run in the fourth. Following a ground out, Peter Barrows tripled to deep center field. Dillon Usiak then brought Barrows home with a sacrifice fly to left. Barrows kept his hitting shoes on later in the sixth with a one-out double to right. Usiak reached on an error by the second baseman that also moved Barrows to third. A safety squeeze bunt by Todd Jennings scored Barrows for a 2-0 lead.
The Explorers added insurance runs in each of the seventh and ninth innings for the final margin. Sioux City starter Patrick Johnson took a no-hitter into the seventh and picked up the win. The first of just two hits on the night for Kansas City (14-17) came from T.J. Mittelstaedt on a single to center. Johnson (3-1) went seven innings and gave up one hit with five strikeouts and four walks. Michael Nannini took the loss for the T-Bones. Nannini (0-1) lasted six innings and yielded two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Chris Bodishbaugh pitched a 1-2-3 ninth and earned his fourth save of the season.
Oscar Mesa (pictured) and Peter Barrows led the offensive attack for the X’s. Mesa and Barrows both went 3-for-4. Mesa scored a run, while Barrows scored twice. The Explorers road winning streak now stands at four, and the team has won six of its last seven overall.
