Sioux City-----The St. Paul Saints defeated the Explorers 7-3 here Friday in the first game of a four-game series. The victory extended the St. Paul winning streak to six games while the Explorers lost their third contest in their last four games.
The Saints got on the scoreboard in the second inning scoring two runs off losing hurler Ty Marotz (3-2) and then stretched that lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning on a three-run home run by Miles Durham. The Explorers would score twice in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Kris Sanchez, his 12th home run of the season and his fourth round tripper in the last five games. Sioux City would cut the lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning when Brandon Newton led off the sixth with a double and scored later in the inning on a ground ball out by Peter Barrows.
The contest would remain 5-3 until the ninth inning when St. Paul would score two un-earned runs to stretch the lead to 7-3, which would be the final score. The second game of the four-game series will be Saturday at Lewis and Clark Park with game time set for 7:05.
