February 23, 2010 - SIOUX CITY, IA – The Sioux City Explorers announced today that they once again dipped into the Pittsburgh Pirates organization and have signed 1B Kent Sakamoto to a 2010 American Association Contract.

“With signing Sakamoto it gives us a true first baseman that provides us with offense and good defense,” comments field manager Les Lancaster. “Going into spring training, I see Kent fitting into the 5th to 7th spot in the batting order”.

The 25-year old Bakersfield, California native has spent the last (4) seasons in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. In 2007, as a member of the Pirates Single A affiliate in Hickory, NC, Sakamoto hit .280 while accumulating (26) doubles, (14) home runs, while driving in (66) RBI’s.

In 2008, Sakamoto was promoted to the Pirates High A team in Lynchburg, VA where he continued to produce by collecting (35) doubles, (10) home runs, while driving in another (66) RBI’s to match his RBI total from the previous season.

As a member of the Lynchburg Hillcats in 2009, Sakamoto was limited to only (72) games, but still managed to collect (11) doubles, (7) home runs, while driving in (29) RBI’s.

Sakamoto attended Fresno State University and was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 12th round of the 2006 Amateur Draft and the 2010 season will be his 5th season in professional baseball and first as a member of the Sioux City Explorers.
