February 28, 2005 - Sioux City, IA - The Sioux City Explorers announced that Billy Williams has been named hitting coach for the X’s during the 2005 campaign. Williams has been with the Sioux Falls Canaries the past 5 season and spent 11 years prior to that as a coach in the Cleveland Indians organization.
“Billy Williams brings experience to our coaching staff both in the Northern League and at every level of professional baseball,” comments General Manager Chuck Robbins. “We now have a manager (Steve Shirley) that has played in the major leagues and a hitting coach who has both coached and played in the majors.
The Newberry, S.C. native brings an impressive resume to the Explorers coaching staff. While with the Sioux Falls Canaries, Williams served as the hitting instructor and third base coach, while also focusing on the Canaries’ outfielders and baserunners. Prior to Williams’ time with the Canaries, he spent 11 seasons with the Cleveland Indians organization. The high point of his coaching career came in 1990 and 1991 when he served as a coach at the Major League level under John McNamara.
Williams’ playing career spanned 17 years with 16 of them coming as an outfielder in the Cleveland Indians minor league system. In 1969, Billy finally got his chance in the big leagues when he played in four games with the Seattle Pilots. In those four games, Billy got 10 at-bats and scored one run.
Billy currently lives in Oakland, CA with his wife Christine. He is a father to six children; Billy, JR., Michael, Belita, Tracy and Cheryl. Williams will arrive in Sioux City in late April with training camp set to open on May 5th.
